Christian Karbaum is a partner at GLADE MICHEL WIRTZ in the COMPETITION practice. He advises German and international clients on issues relating to German and European competition law. He focuses on merger control proceedings, cartel investigations, and the representation of companies and individuals in disputes over cartel damage claims and the enforcement of standard-essential patents.

Christian Karbaum studied law at the University of Osnabrück and at the Université Paris-Est Créteil Val de Marne. He passed his Legal State Exams in 2006 and 2010. His doctorate thesis regarding "Competition law compliance – Legal foundations and implementation", which was supervised by Prof Dr Fuchs, University of Osnabück, was sponsored with a scholarship from the "Business and Law Working Group" in the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft. Christian Karbaum is a member of the German Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht. He speaks German, English, and basic French.

Christian Karbaum spends as much time as possible with his wife and two sons, friends, sports (running, football, cycling), and literature.



Recently and at present, Christian Karbaum has advised on the following matters:

  • Defence of companies and individuals in cartel investigations (including the cases "special mining services", "rail technology", "power transformers", "mill cartel", and "food retail" before the Federal Cartel Office)
  • Antitrust litigation in the context of the enforcement of cartel damage claims in relation to the German cartel cases "building technology", "rail technology", "mills", "beer", "flour", "drugstore products", "sausages", or "sanitary fittings" as well as regarding the E.U. cases "retail food packaging", "air cargo", and "gas insulated switchgears". He also advises companies like Samsung on the enforcement of standard-essential patents (e.g. in negotiations, litigation, and investigations by the European Commission)
  • Administrative matters: representation of companies like Deutsche Telekom AG as well as a fuel supplier in administrative and court proceedings following third-party complaints
  • Merger control/Advice on the preparation and implementation of mergers, e.g. to United Internet AG in the recent acquisitions of Strato AG and Drillisch AG as well as the establishment of a joint affiliate marketing network (AWIN AG) with Axel Springer, Haniel in the acquisitions of Rovema and the European business of Rentokil Initial, private equity fonds like Oakley Capital and Vitruvian Partners etc.
  • Compliance: Advice on cooperation among competitors and the development, implementation, and evaluation of compliance organisations (e.g for a global logistics group) as well as advice on distribution systems
